you've decided you want to learn to drive, what do you do next

Before you can learn to drive you must be in possession of a valid provisional licence. You can apply for your provisional licence 3 months before your entitled to learn to drive. For learning to drive a car this is on your 17th birthday unless you are receiving the higher rate of the mobility component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA) in which case you can start learning to drive at 16.

To apply for your provisional licence you must be a resident of Great Britain, meet the minimum age requirement, meet the minimum eyesight requirement and not be prevented from driving for any reason.

You can apply for your provisional driving licence online [Click here] by using the Government Gateway or by post by completing a D1 Application Form. You can get the D1 application pack from the Post Office or from your local DVLA office or online via the DVLA form ordering service [Click here].

The current price of a UK Provisional Driving Licence is £50.
